Royal Yacht Britannia, Royal Marines Bandsman’s Tunic & Trousers, Uniform
Station 109 Vintage Rushden is pleased to offer this genuine vintage Royal Yacht Britannia Royal Marines Bandsman’s Uniform Tunic and Trousers. Both the tunic and the trousers are in very good vintage condition, as the photographs clearly show. There is a small moth nibble to the trousers, which is barely noticeable but mentioned here for accuracy. (Please note that any white circular patches are the result of lighting conditions on the camera and are not marks on the fabric of the uniform.)
The label on the tunic states:
Royal Yacht Tunic
(The name of the original owner)
Height 5’ 10”
Chest 39 ½”
*Waist 32 ½”
(*Measured across the waist the trousers seem closer to 30” than 32 ½”)
The tailor’s name also appears on the tunic label:
Uniform Clothing & Equipment Co Ltd, London CT3A/1571
The trouser’s label reads:
Trousers Mens No.1 Dress R.M. Band
Size 17 Edgard & Sons Ltd
When the Royal Yacht Britannia was in service the Royal Marines band travelled with them. They entertained ‘Beat Retreat’ on the quayside, played to guests at the end of dinner and would entertain at official functions.
In December 1997, the Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned. It is now a floating museum in the Edinburgh Docks. Royal Marines Bandsman’s Uniforms are still displayed aboard the Royal Yacht Museum.
The wearer of this uniform (name supplied on label) would almost certainly have played in front of Her Majesty, the Royal Family and dignitaries from all over the world.
This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of history!!
