WWI CARVED WOODEN TRENCH ART PEN REST

WWI PEN REST

This WWI pen rest has been carved from a piece of oak ‘FROM THE HINDENBERG LINE’ (This appears on the front of the pen rest ~ spelling as carved.)The carving exposes a naive hand but this only adds to its personalised attraction as a genuine piece of ‘trench art’ harking back to the Great War. At the top left hand corner of the pen rest there is a carving of the Northamptonshire Regiment badge and on the opposite side a crossed pick axe and rifle suggesting a Pioneer Battalion. In the centre of these two emblems lies a hollow, inset with a black Bakelite ring. At one time this would have held an ink well. Above the pen rest groove, in a scrolling format, appear the words ‘YPRES 1915 * LOOS * [what appears to be AULLUCH] * 1916 * SOMME’. On either side of the pen rest groove are the words ‘ARMENTIERS’ and ‘OVILLERS’ Beneath the pen groove are the carved words ‘ A SOUVENIER 19 ~ ARRAS ~ 17’, and then, on the front edge of the pen stand, the words ‘FROM THE HINDENBERG LINE’.

This evocative piece of WWI history measures approximately 9 1/2ins x 6 3/4ins (24cm x 17cm).
